The International Non-Destructive Testing and Evaluation of Wood Symposium was a great success! The Symposium brings together two groups of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO): 5.01.00 – Wood and fiber quality and 5.01.09 – Non-destructive evaluation of wood and wood-based materials. For the 22nd edition of this meeting, University Laval, and more specifically the CRMR, hosted this biennial international event. Exceptionally, the event was postponed for one year due to the global pandemic. This was the first NDTE symposium to be held in hybrid.

The Wood Quality Research Group brings together a variety of interests that include studies on wood formation, structure, and chemistry, as well as studies on wood end-use requirements. All, however, share the common goal of understanding the fundamental properties of an important biological material, how the environment and other factors affect these properties, how these properties may be influenced by a changing wood resource, and how these properties influence the use of wood resources.

The ultimate goal of this knowledge is the sustainable and efficient use of our valuable wood resource. In this symposium, wood quality is paired with the science of non-destructive evaluation, a science that involves identifying the physical and mechanical properties of a material without altering its end-use capabilities. These evaluations rely on non-destructive testing technologies to provide accurate information about the properties, performance or quality of the material in question.

The objective of these symposia is to disseminate information on the latest research advances and improvements in the field of wood quality and non-destructive testing in order to bridge the gap between research and industrial applications. We can say: mission accomplished!

The next edition of the symposium will be held in Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil! Stay tuned, Dr. Raquel Gonçalves, professor at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) will organize the symposium!
