MRQ Network – 20 minutes of science with Rafael Eloy De Souza (BTL)

9 September 2021
Don’t miss Rafael Eloy De Souza’s 20 minutes of science on Thursday, September 9, from 10-11am!

The presentation will be in English.

Rafael is graduated in Forestry Engineering and obtanied a master’s degree with emphasis on Forest Products Technology at Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil. He has an expertise in Wood Science and Technology, in production of wood panel, and synthesis of adhesives with a focus on kraft lignin for the synthesis of adhesives for wood panels. He worked in research lines of urea formaldehyde and phenol formaldehyde adhesives, wood quality for wood panels and cellulose production. He also worked on projects about production of solid biofuels from lignocellulosic waste. Currently, he is a Ph.D. student in Chemical Engineering at the Biomass Technology Laboratory (BTL) at Sherbrooke University.

Summary of his research

Use of natural resources as a replacement for raw material from petroleum has gained increasing attention from the scientific community regarding the use of these resources as substitutes for products derived from petroleum. The great challenge of reducing carbon emissions into the atmosphere has led not only to the study of the use of natural resources, but also the use of by-products from various industrial processes in energy generation. However, because these by-products have already been modified previously in the industrial process, their characteristics and properties change, which ends up generating an intrinsic challenge to the material for its use in energy generation. As an example of these new uses, we can mention pellets. Pellets are densified materials that are produced, often from biomass residues, for energy production. Since then, different types of materials have been studied in the manufacture of pellets in order to find a new raw material for its production. However, not all the raw materials tested have generated pellets with satisfactory quality for its use, since these products must meet the standardization rules established for their use. In everyday life, paper, which is a product from biomass, is present in many ways, whether in the form of packaging or as part of an everyday product. The management of this waste has become an area of concern for many establishments. There is no much information available on the suitability and processes of pelletizing different waste paper for use as biofuels. Thus, our objective is to discuss the main challenges that the use of waste paper has brought to its use as biofuel.
