MRQ – 20 minutes of science! with Thomas Cardinal (ÉTS)

12 March 2021

March 12, 2021 – 4:00 pm, on Zoom (see login information below)

During this virtual event, we will have the pleasure of hearing Thomas Cardinal, a master’s student at the École de Technologie Supérieure (ÉTS) under the direction of Annie Levasseur, who holds the Canada Research Chair on Measuring the Impact of Human Activities on Climate Change ‼

The Quebec Action Plan on Climate Change offers a relatively modest place to the forest sector. 🌲 However, in several of its studies, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) highlights the great potential of forests in mitigating climate change. Concretely, the forest sector can contribute to reducing GHG emissions by increasing the forest area or density and by using wood products to substitute products that emit high GHG emissions.

The proposed research project aims to reduce uncertainties regarding GHG emissions associated with the LCA life cycle of different wood products (lumber, engineered wood, bioenergy) and substituted products (concrete, steel, fossil fuels). This will contribute to the development of optimal strategies for forestry practices in Quebec aimed at mitigating climate change through the protection and enhancement of forest carbon sinks, increased storage in wood products and the substitution of high GHG emitting products on the markets.
