Whether as a member of a review committee or as a candidate in a selection process (grant, award, promotion), researchers often use bibliometric indicators to evaluate others or showcase their research outputs. But which are the most commonly used indicators (citations, impact factor, h-index), where do they come from, and their limitations? How can they be used as a piece of the story describing the impact of one’s research, and what issues does their application among disciplines raise? Finally, what are the current issues related to bibliometrics and the impact of research in the scientific publishing ecosystem?

Course content :

  • Introduction to bibliometrics
  • Presentation of the commonly used indicators
  • Transformations in research evaluation system
  • Understanding the limits of bibliometrics
