Ambitious research program to adapt silviculture to new climatic and environmental realities

14 March 2021

Université Laval announced today an ambitious research program to help the forestry sector adapt its silvicultural practices to new climatic and environmental realities. Called Silva21, the program’s objective is to provide data, tools and practical solutions that will enable forestry managers to improve the resilience of forests to various disturbances and sources of stress, thereby helping to ensure the health of these ecosystems and the well-being of the communities that depend on them.

The project is supported by $5.5M in funding over five years, of which $3.4M is from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Alliance Grants Program. An amount of $2.1M from about 15 public and private partners completes the funding. The scientific direction of the program will be ensured by Alexis Achim, professor at the Faculty of Forestry, Geography and Geomatics of Laval University.
